Bedford Art Society (known as the Bedford Art Circle from 1954 to 1975) was founded in 1954.
The Bedford Art Society has now been in existence for over 70 years. The beginning can be traced back to two groups, the Bedford Society of Artists and the Midland Sketch Club who merged in 1954. The latter not only covered Bedfordshire but also parts of Buckinghamshire and Northamptonshire, though the former catered more specifically for Bedford and Bedfordshire artists.
The Society exists to promote local interest in the visual arts. It enables those with an interest in art to hear talks, to see practical demonstrations, to exhibit their work in the Society's exhibitions, to visit art galleries and to take part in a number of practical opportunities for enjoying art. It is a non-profit making organisation run by a committee.
The Society has a vibrant mix of members ranging from professionally trained and amateur artists to members who simply take an interest in the arts and, although not creatives, are nevertheless great supporters and enthusiasts.
The Society's year runs from the beginning of August to the end of the following July. The Society's AGM is held in October. For a full list of the yearly events, go to our Events page.
